STEP 19 - MOOD MANAGEMENT 4 : ABANDONMENT

Very young children often experience fear and upset at the time of separation from a parent.

This can occur when starting daycare or school, or being left at home with a babysitter.

To support preschool age children during this upsetting time, try the following technique.

Purchase an Essential Oil Diffuser Necklace and let your child see you wearing it during the day. If the child is old enough to comprehend, express your love for your new necklace—call it your "SPECIAL OIL NECKLACE!"

When it’s time to separate from your child, tell them, clearly and joyfully, that you will be back! Then say this:

“Tell you what. How would you like to borrow my Special Oil Necklace while I’m gone? This is a very important necklace, and I’ll be coming back to get it, but you can borrow it. Just promise to keep it safe until I get back, okay?”

Giving the child a task, or mission, in connection with the time away, takes the focus off the separation; giving him a tangible item to hold onto, in place of your presence until your return, provides reassurance.

Before placing the necklace around your child's neck, choose two of the following oil blends.

  • Peace Blend (earth, floral, and mint aromas)

  • Console Blend (floral, woody, and earth aromas)

  • Balance Blend (Earth, pine, and floral aromas)

  • Lavender Peace Blend (Earth, floral, and herbal aromas)

Each of these blends have been known to reduce feelings of abandonment and emotional upset, and provide comfort, grounding, and security to those who need it.

Ask your child if he would like to choose which oil to put in the necklace. You’ll probably find that he will intuitively know to select the aroma that is most familiar and comforting to him. If the child is too young to understand the logic of the necklace technique, you can diffuse the oil in the home, or place a drop on his shirt, near the chest area, so that he will be able to smell it.
